We were always at odds, and I didn’t like him, so one day he called me into the office to confront me about something. I felt that it was a stupid reason to call me into the office for and I felt that he would begin his harassment towards me now that he was a manager, so I overreacted and told him that I wasn’t going to work under him and that I quit. I got up and walked out. When my anger subsided, I realized I had made a rash decision and a grave mistake because it was a really good job, and I was getting paid well.   A child who takes everything that their teacher says as truth has a simple epistemology. From that child's view, the information that they receive is right because the teacher said so. If a person believes or accepts mainly conventional information, they have a limited epistemology. From that person's view, the information is right because everyone says that it is correct. Usually, the authority figure influences the person that the information is right. People who have a strong epistemology have strong critical thinking and analytical skills. They question everything and evaluate every logical step before they accept something as a justified belief. For those who have a strong epistemology, a position or information is right because they have assessed it, and they have determined that the information or position has passed their test.

  Response to fellow post: The best choice for this dilemma is for the captain to show leadership. First, it is common knowledge as a seaman that a captain is the last one off the ship if the ship was going down. The captain stays with the ship because that's what a ship captain does. So, the captain in this scenario already displayed cowardice in this scenario by being in the lifeboat.
